Impala Canada Limited is a mining company subsidiary of Implats, a leading producer of platinum group metals. The company's history dates back to 1969, founded as the International Nickel Company of Canada (Inco). Inco initially focused on nickel mining and refining, and the company became one of the world's largest nickel producers. In 1995, Inco acquired a 50% stake in the Sudbury operations of Falconbridge, another Canadian mining company. In 2006, Inco was acquired by Vale, a Brazilian mining company, in a $19.4 billion deal. As part of the deal, some of Inco's assets, including the Sudbury operations, were sold to Xstrata, a Swiss mining company. In 2011, Xstrata sold its Sudbury assets to a consortium led by Teachers' Private Capital, the private investment arm of the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan. The new company was renamed Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations (SION), and Impala Canada Limited was formed as a subsidiary of SION.
