Spotlight on Cobre Panama

Cobre Panama, the latest addition to First Quantum's portfolio, represents a monumental leap forward in copper mining, located in Colon Province, 120km west of Panama City. This pre-eminent facility commands a staggering 3.0 billion tonnes of proven and probable reserves, making it one of the significant copper mines initiated in the last decade. Cobre Panama's infrastructure includes open pits, a contemporary processing plant, dual 150-megawatt power stations, and a port for logistical efficacy. Initiating commercial production in 2019, the complex is designed to process 85 million tonnes of ore annually, producing in excess of 300,000 tonnes of copper alongside by-products like gold, silver, and molybdenum. Ensuring substantial local employment, Cobre Panama is expected to employ around 4,500 individuals, bolstering both the local economy and community. This operation reflects First Quantum's advancement to a commanding 90 per cent ownership stake in Minera Panamá, S.A., the company that possesses the Cobre Panama concession.
