Cripple Creek and Victor Gold Mine are in Colorado in the United States. The area around the mines was initially inhabited by the Ute Indians, who considered the site sacred. The first gold discovery in the area was made in 1890 by a rancher named Bob Womack. Womack had been searching for gold in the area for years, and his discovery finally led to a rush of prospectors into the region. As a result, the town of Cripple Creek was founded in 1891 and soon became a booming gold mining town. The Cripple Creek and Victor Gold Mine were established in 1896 after a large gold deposit was discovered in the area. The mine quickly became one of the most productive gold mines in the world, producing over 21 million ounces of gold by the time it closed in 1961. The mining operations in the area were not without controversy, as labor disputes and strikes were common. For example, in 1904, a strike by mine workers in Cripple Creek resulted in the Colorado National Guard being called to suppress the strike. The violence that followed led to the deaths of several people, and the incident is now known as the Cripple Creek Massacre. The Cripple Creek and Victor Gold Mine were reopened in 1976, and modern mining techniques were implemented to increase production. Today, the mine is owned by Newmont Corporation, one of the largest gold mining companies in the world. The mine continues to significantly contribute to the region's economy and is a popular tourist destination.
